30 Bible Verses About Evangelism and Sharing Your Faith

If you want to grow in sharing your faith, start where the early church started: with what God has said. These thirty verses are a good place to start — to remember why we go, what we say, and who does the saving.

The command: go

• Matthew 28:19-20 — "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations..." The Great Commission, with the promise "I am with you always."
• Mark 16:15 — "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation."
• Acts 1:8 — "You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Local first, then global.
• John 20:21 — "As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."
• Matthew 5:16 — "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Our lives speak before our words do.

The message: the gospel

• 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 — "Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures."
• Romans 1:16 — "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes."
• John 3:16 — "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
• Romans 5:8 — "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
• Ephesians 2:8-9 — "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God."

The motive: God's heart for people

• 2 Corinthians 5:14 — "For Christ's love compels us."
• 2 Corinthians 5:20 — "We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us."
• Luke 19:10 — "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."
• 2 Peter 3:9 — "He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

Guilt is a poor fuel for evangelism. Love is the lasting one. We share because we have been loved, and because God loves the person in front of us more than we ever could.

The need: the harvest is ready

• Romans 10:14-15 — "How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?"
• Matthew 9:37-38 — "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."
• John 4:35 — "Open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest."

The way: how to share

• 1 Peter 3:15 — "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."
• Colossians 4:6 — "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."
• 1 Thessalonians 2:8 — "We loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well."
• 1 Corinthians 9:22 — "I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some."
• 2 Timothy 4:2 — "Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season."

The Bible cares about how we share as much as what we share. Gentleness, respect, grace and a shared life are not optional extras. They are how the message is heard. For practical help, see how to start a conversation about Jesus.

The courage: you are not alone

• 2 Timothy 1:7 — "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."
• Acts 4:29 — "Enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness." The early church prayed for boldness rather than for safety.
• Ephesians 6:19 — "Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel."
• Matthew 10:19-20 — "Do not worry about what to say or how to say it... for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you."

The fruit: God gives the growth

• 1 Corinthians 3:6 — "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow."
• Isaiah 55:11 — "So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty."
• Luke 15:7 — "There will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent."
• Daniel 12:3 — "Those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever."

Results belong to God. That is freeing: our job is faithfulness, and He has promised His word will not return empty.

How to use these verses

• Memorise a few. Start with Matthew 28:19-20, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 and 1 Peter 3:15.
