Why a City Needs a Party: The Case for the Jesus Festival
A lot of people's picture of church is a building they've never been inside and a set of rules they assume they've already broken.
A festival breaks that picture in about ten minutes.
Every year, thousands of people gather in Hamilton for the Jesus Festival — free, family-friendly, outdoors, no cover charge and no catch. Music, prayer, food, kids running around, and the name of Jesus lifted up in public with joy instead of apology.
Why it works
It removes the barrier to entry
Nobody has to walk into an unfamiliar building, dress a certain way, or know when to stand up. It's a park. It's free. You can come with your kids and leave whenever you want. That lowers the threshold for people who'd never accept an invitation to a service.
It's public, and joy is disarming
Plenty of people expect Christians to be angry or judgmental. It's very hard to hold onto that when you're standing in a crowd of people who are visibly, genuinely glad. Joy does apologetics that arguments can't.
It gathers the whole church, not one church
Congregations that rarely work together end up serving side by side. Something happens in a city when the church stops competing and starts carrying one thing together.
