Map Your Oikos: Reaching the People Already Around You

July 29, 2026  ·  5 min read  ·  Daniel & Katie Ziedins

One of the biggest lies about evangelism is that it starts somewhere far away.

Scripture keeps showing the opposite. When God saved someone, the gospel usually moved straight through their existing relationships. Cornelius "called together his relatives and close friends" (Acts 10:24). The Samaritan woman ran back to her own town. Andrew's first move was to find his brother.

The New Testament word for that relational world is oikos — household. Not just blood family, but the people your life actually touches: family, close friends, neighbours, coworkers, the barista who knows your order.

Why this matters so much

Your oikos is the group of people who will listen to you longer than they'd listen to a stranger. You've earned trust with them. You'll see them again next week. You already know what they're carrying.

Most believers can name twenty people they see regularly and haven't prayed for once by name.

How to map yours in ten minutes

  1. Write down eight to fifteen names. Don't filter. Family, work, neighbours, hobbies, the school run.
  2. Mark where each person is. Following Jesus? Curious? Not interested? Hurting?
  3. Pray for them by name daily. This is the part that changes things — and it changes you before it changes them.
  4. Pick one practical act of love per person. A meal, a ride, a text on a hard day, showing up when nobody else does.
  5. Watch for open doors. Availability plus prayer plus time is a powerful combination.

We made Oikos Map free so there's no excuse not to start. Map your people, keep it somewhere you'll see it, and pray.

"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." — Matthew 6:10

Then keep track of what God's doing

Praying is step one. Remembering is step two. We've had far too many conversations where someone opened up and then — because life got busy — we never circled back. That's why we use Kingdom Base: it holds the conversations, the follow-ups, and the prayer requests so people don't fall through the cracks.

And if your life is simply too disorganised to be faithful with any of it, that's worth fixing too. TaskSimply is what keeps our own tasks, team, and budget from running us over.

The multiplication no one sees coming

Here's what we've watched happen for over a decade: one person starts praying for their oikos. One of those people meets Jesus. That person has an oikos of their own — and suddenly the gospel is in a family, a workplace, a whole street that no outreach event would have reached.

That's how movements actually grow. Not through crowds, but through households.

If you want to see that pattern at scale across our region, Thy Kingdom Network is where the wider movement connects — churches, believers, and builders all pulling in the same direction.
